I’ve only been studying Tango for about 1 1/2 years and there are many things I want to improve about my dancing as well as there being many more things to learn. This is one of the big reasons I came to BsAs, to improve my social dancing. I began by taking group classes, and let me tell you, you could go to group classes from 9:30 in the morning to 11:30 in the evening and then Milongas til 5:00am! That gives you a couple hours to sleep and get right back at it, and this is every day! O.K., I’m not that hardcore and I need my sleep plus my left foot is still bothering me, although it is better. I’m still going to group classes, probably five or six times a week and I’ve been taking private classes. Money well spent, to learn the mechanics of the movements, body position and possibilities for connecting movements, it also gives you the tools to get more out of group classes where you don’t get as much individual attention. I’ve never been under any illusion that I’m a superstar on the Milonga dance floor, but picking apart things you’ve been doing and have not learned well is a bit hard on the ego! I have to admit I had a little trouble getting back on the dance floor, I felt as though I really didn’t know what I was doing out there at all! Fear overcome, I’m back at it. Clearly dancing with a great teacher who can diagnose and correct your timing, posture and movement in a few bars of music is pretty different than dancing with a complete stranger you need to connect with in the first few bars of a tanda, however, there are really great leaders on the dance floor and I think it will just take some perseverance to continue to find and dance with them! And, there are still so many Milongas I haven’t been to!
MOMMA! Your adventure sound amazing, I bet you are better than you think at dancing darlin’. How are you? I love reading your blog, makes me want to be somewhere warm and fun with you. Jan says “hiiiiii mooommmmaaa”
