Semana Santa

The Easter Weekend/Week was six days this year, there was a national holiday, Malvinas Day (Falklans Islands), tacked on as well. People get a lot of holidays here, it seems like at least two a month! My goodness the city emptied out, I could actually get on the Subte without strategizing how I was going to squeeze onto an already packed train! The weather was/is still fabulous.
I visited a new friend in the suburbs, a one hour ride in a van through the city, with no end to the city in site. It was really great to see a residential neighbourhood, William Brown, named after an Irishman who helped build the railway, single family homes and quiet/clean commercial center. And to visit a typical home with a yard and garden, not the experience most tourists get.
Saturday was the start of car racing, TC 2000.

The track/route was not far from my apartment so I walked over to see what all the fuss was about. The sound was absolutely deafening, the day hot and the crowd substantial. When I returned I turned the TV on and was able to watch the racing and at the same time hear it out my window, kind of absurd. The weekend ended sadly and tragically for many when a freak rainstorm dumped more than the annual rainfall in just a few hours. 51 people died and many more lost everything in the flooding. I am grateful to be living in an area of the city not affected by the flooding, I am sure it will be a lengthy process to clean up the mess and restore lives.
